The Grands Fonds region at the centre of Grande-Terre lies inland from Sainte-Anne, Morne-à-l'Eau and Le Moule. It is the quintessence of agricultural Guadeloupe with fruit farms and other food producing plantations. Deep valleys border the expanses of greenery and the roads wind constantly... Among its many inhabitants are the Blancs-Matignon community, who eke out a hard existence form the soil. See this region, so contrasting to coastal Guadeloupe, on foot or by 4x4.
A last survivor from Grande-Terre's golden age of sugar production from the late 19C to the 1950s, the refinery allows visitors to better understand the sugar manufacturing process, from its raw cane state to the finished product ready for export. Closed-toe footwear recommended.
A 5min boat trip from Le Gosier (or a swim from Datcha beach for strong swimmers) takes you to the Îlet du Gosier, a little island dominated by its red and white lighthouse. During the weekend, the island is busy with families and groups of friends who come here for a barbecue. Snorkelling enthusiasts can head to the east or west of the island where they can explore the coral reef, but should avoid the far side of the island where the sea is too rough. Bring a picnic.
La Caravelle beach has an idyllic picture-postcard feel thanks to its coconut trees shading white sand and its clear waters. The beach is the site of a Club Med resort and is accessed via a small gate.
